From our earliest days, Allen Academy has been a place where learning, leadership, and belonging come together. Rooted in history and enriched by generations of families, we continue to inspire students to grow with confidence and purpose.
Allen Academy’s story begins in 1886 in Madisonville, Texas, when brothers John H. and Rivers O. Allen, educators from Mississippi, founded Madison Academy with a simple but bold vision: to educate young men and women with purpose and integrity. By 1895 the school had grown into Madison College, and just a year later, it was officially renamed Allen Academy in honor of its determined founders.
Seeking a location that would allow their students broader opportunities, the Allen brothers moved the school to Bryan in 1899. Bryan’s central location and growing railroad lines made it the perfect setting for a premier college preparatory school serving families across Texas. Local community leaders welcomed Allen Academy into the city and helped establish it as a thriving boarding school for boys. With rigorous academics and a reputation for character development, Allen quickly became known as one of the finest college preparatory schools in the state.
As America entered World War I in 1917, Allen Academy evolved once again by integrating military training into its curriculum. Over the next six decades, Allen earned a national reputation for excellence. From 1922 to 1983, the Allen Academy Corps of Cadets received the U.S. Army’s highest honor, Honor Military School with Distinction, a record unmatched in Texas and rarely equaled nationwide. Discipline, leadership, and pride became hallmarks of the Allen experience.
By the late 1980s, Allen Academy transitioned to meet the needs of a changing world. In 1988, military programming concluded, and Allen returned to its roots as a coeducational college preparatory school. Soon after, the school relocated to its current 40-acre campus at the corner of Boonville Road and Highway 1179 in Bryan, a beautiful setting designed for learning, community, and growth.
Today, more than 130 years after its founding, Allen Academy proudly stands as the oldest accredited, non-religious preparatory school in Texas. Serving more than 350 students from age 3 through grade 12, Allen remains true to its heritage while preparing students for a rapidly changing future. On our campus, young learners discover curiosity and confidence, middle schoolers build character and resilience, and upper school students tackle rigorous academics that prepare them for success in college and beyond.
At Allen, learning is personal. Relationships are at the heart of everything we do. Students are known by name, challenged intellectually, and supported by a caring, talented faculty. Our global perspective, delivered through an innovative curriculum, international programs, and real-world learning experiences, equips students with the skills to lead, collaborate, and thrive.
Allen Academy’s impact is seen in every graduate. There’s Sarah, who came to Allen as a quiet sixth grader and left as an AP Scholar, student body president, and valedictorian. Or John, a “lifer” who attended all 15 years at Allen and went on to play college football while pursuing a career in engineering. Their stories reflect what makes Allen exceptional: a commitment to developing the whole student—mind, heart, and character.
Whether your child begins their journey in Pre-K or joins us later, Allen Academy is a place where potential is discovered, nurtured, and celebrated. We invite you to visit our campus, meet our community, and experience what makes Allen Academy more than a school, but a place rooted in tradition, family, and a future built on excellence.
